You don’t get better by sitting on the couch and thinking about shooting, you get up and do it. With ten shooters in attendance the Wednesday night ARGC Action Shooting Mini Match was well attended. As per the norm, a 3 stage match was in order with all stages concentrating on the use of strong and weak had shooting. Often encountered at regular matches, strong and weak hand shooting catches competitors off guard and effects both stage and overall scores. Always trying to improve to our personal best, this was the perfect opportunity to put everyone to the test.
Stage 1 had a 24 round count with 12 paper targets hidden by “Barriers and Barrels”. Working from behind barriers with only 3, one foot wide ports you had to engage all targets with strong hand, weak hand, and free hand (both hands), but only using 1 grip per port. To add to the confusion barrels behind the barriers limited access to the targets and required concentration to ensure all targets were engaged.
Stage 2 & 3 were short 10 round stages, but didn’t hold back on fun. “Interrogation Escape” found our shooters in a bad situation. Shackled to a table you had to retrieve your gun that the “guards” had left loaded in front of you. Remaining shacked and engaging 5 paper targets at various distances and angles meant the use of strong hand weak hand might be required. Being a fast stage, accuracy played an important roll scoring well on this stage. “Doing it Off” forced only weak hand shooting technique while engaging 2 paper with 2 no shoots, 4 steel poppers, and finally a lone paper. Again a fast stage where accuracy, no shoots, and misses play a big factor in the end results.
As Mark often says “it is the mistakes that make the difference”. In this sport it couldn’t be more true. Physical and mental concentration have to be combined to accomplish good shooting, a breakdown of either can spell certain disaster. In the end and to quote the great Vince Lombardi “Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect”. So after lots of laughs and a great review over cold beers, a great group of action shooters will continue to practice perfect in order to reach perfection.
